The Bankruptcy Code requires two sessions of credit counseling for debtors: one session is done before filing for bankruptcy, and one session is done after filing for bankruptcy. These sessions serve to evaluate debtors’ finances and train debtors in money management skills so that they exit bankruptcy with the best chance of avoiding future financial pitfalls.
